Music is a subject on which the Bible records a wealth of information.  Both vocal and instrumental music are mentioned often and various instruments are identified.  The Psalms have been called "The Hebrew Hymnbook," and there are many songs included in the text of other books of the Old Testament.  New Testament hymn texts also appear in the Epistles.  Our practice of singing hymns when we meet together has precedent in the fellowship of Christ and His disciples.  After the Last Supper, they "sang a hymn." Clearly, it is God's plan that music be an important part of worship and daily life.

It has been in the last generation that cultural trends have overwhelmed the music used by the church in worshipping God, and in the daily lives of Christians who are supposed to be "salt and light" in a fallen world.  To advance the "Contemporary Christian Music" (CCM) industry, Christian "artists" have introduced a new concept into the public discussion of music that was unknown prior to its use in defending carnal music.  The argument claims that the musical sound is "amoral;" only the words communicate truth or error.  Again, before the advent of CCM, no musician made such claim.

While the degradation of Christian music and the general acceptance of CCM within Evangelicalism has taken place, many pastors have made two grievous errors.  First, they have taken advantage of cheap music to attract crowds to hear them preach, and second, they have abdicated the theology of music by arguing that "music is the responsibility of musicians."  The results are that we are close to losing the theology of music as men fit for ordination have signed it away to the "artists."  Our desire is to see that men who know the Bible will preach and write on the theology of music and demonstrate what is properly the ministry of music."
